The Shuōwén Seal form of 乾(􂤯𠄃􂤰𠄊) qián/gān combines 倝(􁉝) qián/gān (phonetic), together with 乙(􂤮) yǐ (天干); 倝(􁉝) itself combines 旦(􁉛) dàn ‘dawn/sunrise’ and 㫃(􁉠􁉡𣃗) yǎn (phonetic). The character 㫃 is said to represent ‘flag/streamers/banners’, as in 旌旗 jīngqí ‘standard/banners’, and as in 旅(􁉹𣃨) lǚ ‘army marching under a standard’. 乾 ☰䷀ Qián (pure yáng) is associated with the ‘royal colors/standard’, in the same way that 阳/昜(􁧕) yáng is said to contain 勿(􁧓) wù ‘flag’.
