The Shuōwén Seal form of 叟(􀠓叜) sǒu ‘elderly/aged/old man, elder’ combines 又(􀠋) yòu ‘(strong right) hand’, and 灾(􁮕) zāi ‘calamity’ (house on fire); old age is the age of calamity, when health/strength and pulse decline (衰恶: 衰落困恶); the old variant 𡨎(􀠔) has 寸(􀡻) cùn ‘pulse point (on the wrist)’, instead of 又(􀠋); another old variant 𠊯(􀠕) adds 人 ‘person/man’.

The character 叟 sǒu ‘elderly/aged/old man, elder’ (老叟) is an old variant of 叜(􀠓), replacing the top part 灾(􁮕) zài ‘calamity/disaster’ (inauspicious) with a shape like 𦥔󰀁, with 臼 jiù (cf. 旧/舊 ‘old’) instead of 𦥑 jú; cf. 叜(􀠓).
