 The simple-form character 监 is an abbrev. of the full form 監, replacing the upper 9 strokes of the full form (臥󰀄) with 5 strokes (); the lower part 皿, formerly 血 is an abbrev. (see below).
 	The full-form character 監 jiān ‘supervise’ seems to have 卧 wò ‘bend down’, over 血 xuè ‘blood’ (in the Seal), but the traditional explanation is more complicated.

 	In the modern simple form 监, the top component 卧 is abbrev. to  (臣 is just  two strokes, and the dot on 血 combined with 卜 to give a shape like 亇).
