The full form 證(􀜗) zhèng ‘prove’ combines 讠(言 yán) ‘direct speech’, 登(􀑵) dēng ‘climb’ (phonetic).
The simplified character 证 zhèng ‘prove’ combines 讠(言 yán) ‘direct speech’, and 正 zhèng ‘right/correct’ (phonosemantic); to speak directly, offering proof pointing right at the truth.
The simple form 证 has 正 zhèng ‘correct’ (phonosemantic) instead of 登.
Note: Today 证 is used as the simple form of 證, but 证 derives from the old form 証 which had a somewhat different meaning (cf. 証), and was formerly also used for 證 zhèng ‘prove/verify’ (cf. 證); today 證 is used among full-form characters, and 証 is uncommon (cf. 证据=證/証據).
Note: The simple form 证 derives from an old form 証(􀙦) zhèng ‘criticize/admonish/accuse’, formerly also used for 證 zhèng ‘prove/verify’ (accusations must be proven true).
Note: Today 證 is simplified to 证 except when the meaning is 症 ‘disease’, cf. 症.
Note: Today the simple form 证 is used except when the meaning is ‘disease’, in which case the simple form is 症 (also sometimes used among full form characters).
