-Picture of clouds. The character 云 was borrowed for the word yún ‘say’ (now rare), which happened to sound the same, and the full form 雲 was created with 雨 (yǔ) ‘rain’ added to the top.
+The Shuōwén Seal form of 云(􂀉) yún ‘clouds’ (mountain/river spirit) combines 上(􀀆𠄞􀀇丄) shàng ‘heavens/above’, and a shape like 厶(􁣶) below representing swirling mist/clouds; formerly wr. 𡆳(􂀊), the main SW form 雲(􂀈) has 雨(􁿏) ‘rain’ above instead of 上/𠄞.
