The full-form character 進 seems to combine 辶(辵 chuò) ‘go’, and 隹 zhuī ‘short-tailed bird’, but the old explanation is more complex (隹 is an old abbrev., see below).
The simple-form character 进 is an abbrev. of the full-form character 進, substituting 井 for the full-form component 隹.
In the simple form 进, the full-form component 隹 is reduced to just four strokes 井 jǐng (phonetic).
The full-form character 進 seems to combine 辶(辵 chuò) ‘go’, and 隹 zhuī ‘short-tailed bird’, but the old explanation is more complex (隹 is an old abbrev. discussed below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 進(􀒢) jìn ‘surmount/advance’ is said to combine 辶(辵 chuò) ‘go’, and 閵(􀦼) lín (abbrev. phonetic): the phonetic is abbrev. to 隹(􀦸) zhuī ‘short-tailed bird’, omitting 門; formerly also wr. 𨙟, with 藺 lìn (phonetic), which is apparently short for 躏/躪(􀗞𨆴蹸) lìn ‘trample’ (abbrev. phonosemantic), formerly also wr. 躙, 轥.
