The Shuōwén Seal form of 皇(𦤃) huáng ‘great (emperor/sovereign)’ is said to combine 白(𪞶𦣹自) zì ‘nose/self’, and 王() wáng ‘king’ (phonosemantic): the fragrant royal person/self wills/originates (始) all deeds/things; 皇 as in 三皇 ‘Three Primordial Sovereigns’ (伏羲, 神农, 皇帝) is an old term, used of early and later emperors (cf. 秦始皇). | |||
Note: In 皇, the upper component 白() zì ‘self’ is an old wr. of 自() zì ‘self’, not 白() bái ‘white’; SW includes a comment (讀若 “鼻”), i.e. 白 bí ‘nose’ (cf. 鼻; 白 bái ‘white’). | |||
