The modern character is 身 (shēn) ‘body’ plus 寸 (cùn) ‘hand’. An older seal form was 身 body plus 矢 (shǐ) ‘arrow’. The oldest oracle-bone and bronze characters clearly depict a bow and arrow, and sometimes a hand.
The Shuōwén Seal form of (􀹞) shè ‘shoot’ combines 身(􁙾) shēn ‘body’ (of the archer), and 寸(􀡻) cùn ‘pulse-point; measure/rule’ (as in 守, 封, 忖; hand of the archer); remain vigilant, calm/still the heart/pulse, draw the string/arrow with steady hand toward the body, take careful aim, and take your best shot; formerly wr. 䠶(􀹝), with 矢(􀹜) shǐ ‘arrow’ instead of 寸: shooting with bow/crossbow, the arrow proceeds from near the body of the archer, to strike the distant target.
Note: The component 身(􁙾) shēn ‘body’ cannot have been a close phonetic (though the OC initials were similar), but might have been short for 躬(􁏹􁏸躳) gōng ‘body’, anc. homophone of 弓(􂏄) gōng ‘archer's bow’; the form 矤(􀹥) was early assoc. with 矧 shěn ‘moreover’, in which 引(􂏓) yǐn ‘draw/pull (the bowstring)’; the old component 矢(􀹜) shǐ ‘arrow’ is not a better phonetic than 身 (though the OC initials were also similar); the component 寸(􀡻) cùn ‘pulse-point; measure/rule (take time/care)’ is as in 守(􁏍) ‘guard/watch’, 封(􂙢) ‘territorial boundary; fief’, 刌(􀯧) cǔn ‘sever; guess’ (忖); cf. 𪿎, perhaps a more full form depicting an archer shooting.
Note: Formerly wr. 𨉛 (showing evidence of old 躳), 𨈡, 𢎤, and importantly also 𡬤, in which 申(􂥻), i.e. 伸 ‘stretch/draw’ (phonosemantic), cf. 身, 坤.
Older graphs associated with 射 depict a strung bow and loaded arrow (弓箭), sometimes a hand drawing/shooting the bow/arrow.
Compare: 韘(􀻇􀻈弽㢵) shè ‘thumb ring (archery)’; 舍/捨 shè ‘put down/aside, emit’.
“At the standardization of characters in the third century B.C., the bow was unfortunately exchanged for the character for BODY, which in its oldest form bears some similarity to BOW” —Lindqvist.

射 shè is phonetic in 谢() xiè ‘thank’.
Compare: /謝(􀚉𧬄) xiè ‘thank’ (谢谢! ‘thank you!’); 麝 shè ‘musk deer’.
