The Shuōwén Seal form of 黑(􁯎𪐗) hēi ‘soot-black’ (color of the north) is said to combine 炎(􁯅) yán ‘flames leaping up’, and /𡆧(􁯵􁯴囪) cōng/chuāng ‘vent/chimney/window’ (灶突): fire burning in the stove/fireplace leaves black soot in the chimney/vent.

Older graphs associated with 黑 suggest a 大 ‘person’ with a 甶(􁣲) ‘demon face’ (as in 鬼 guǐ ‘ghost’) and dots/dirt on the face and body.

Compare: 青(􀷋𤯞) qīng ‘green’ (color of the east); 赤(􁯾𤆍) chì ‘red’ (color of the south); 白(􁔹) bái ‘white’ (color of the west); 黄(􂛮黃) huáng ‘yellow’ (color of the earth).
