“The interstices of a woven material, between the crossed threads [爻]; 从巾, 从爻, 象。转注 zhuǎnzhù, loose, not close, thinly, scattered, infrequent. Different 假借 jiǎjiè. Now 稀 xī, literally 禾 grain 希 thin-sown” —Wieger. | The modern form 希 xī is written as if it has 㐅/乂 above and 布 bù ‘cloth’ below; older forms seem to have 爻 above (perhaps as in 网 ‘net’, i.e. ‘sparse weave’), and 巾 jīn ‘cloth’ below; but old evidence suggests that 希 originated as an abbrev. of 稀 xi ‘sparse’. | ||
Note: 希 xī is not defined in Shuōwén, either by accidental omission, or because it was not an old independent character; but it does seem to be a component in several SW Seal forms, treated as 稀() xī (abbrev. phonetic); it was used for 稀/睎/絺 (HDZ). | |||
