The Shuōwén Seal form of 卖/賣(􁃄𧷵) mài ‘sell’ combines 买/買(􁄿𧵽) mǎi ‘buy’ below, with 出 chū ‘go out’ above (for the out-going/exporting side of the deal); 出 was reduced to 士, and then further simplified to 十.
Compare the tones in 买(買) mǎi ‘buy’ (3rd tone), vs. 卖(賣) mài ‘sell’ (4th tone); however, in the word 买卖 mǎimai ‘enterprise’, the last syllable is neutral tone.

Compare: 买(買) mǎi ‘buy’ (3rd tone), vs. 卖(賣) mài ‘sell’ (4th tone); but in the word 买卖 mǎimai ‘enterprise’, the last syllable has neutral tone.
As the phonetic component in other characters, 卖(F賣) is not really 賣 (􁃄𧷵𧷓) mài ‘sell’ (GSR:1240e), but an abbreviation of the old character 𧶠(􁅍𧸇𧷏) yù ‘sell’ (GSR:1023a). (There are, however, two rare exceptions, supposedly read “mài”: 𥌚, 𦏢; cf. 覿, 瀆)

Note: As phonetic, 卖/賣 is not really 賣(􁃄𧷵𧷓) mài ‘sell’ (GSR:1240e), but the old character 𧶠(􁅍𧸇𧷏) yù ‘hawk/sell’ (GSR:1023a); 賣(􁃄) mài is not a component of any Shuōwén characters, but 𧶠(􁅍) yù is phonetic in 20 (cf. 𧶠); later exceptions: 𥌚 mài, 𦏢 mài (cf. 覿, 瀆).
