The character 缐 appears in 《现代汉语词典》 (1983:1251; 1996:1370), where it is glossed as “同 ‘线’; (姓)”; and so it would seem that 缐 is only used to write the Simple form of the surname (written 線 in Full form characters; the Simple form of the surname is not written 线; there is no surname written 綫S线).

For the origin of the modern Simple form 线, see Shuōwén: 綫(􂒢) is the old primary writing (正文), and 線(􂒣) is an ancient variant of that (古文). Thus, to “simplify” the Shuōwén head entries, one might simplify them separately: → 线, 線 → 缐; but in modern usage both of the old forms (綫線 ⇒ 线) merge into 线 (except apparently for the preferred writing of the surname).
