The Shuōwén Seal form of 虫(􂔗) huǐ/chóng is said to depict a venomous/poisonous snake/viper (蝮), and the reading 虫 huǐ connects it with the later wr. 虺(􂔩) huǐ ‘viper’; it is also said to depict various creepy-crawly critters, and the reading 虫 chóng connects it with the general term 蟲(􂗦) chóng ‘insects/critters’; in the pictograph 𦹌(􂔾) chài ‘scorpion’ (虿/蠆: 蝎子) it represents the poisonous tail/stinger of the scorpion (cf. 螫).
