The Shuōwén Seal form of 宜(宐) yí ‘suitable/fit/match’ puts 宀 mián ‘roof’ over 多() duō ‘much’ (abbrev. phonosemantic), over a line 一 (representing the earth/floor); the shape 多 reduced to 夕 is said to represent a happily matched/married couple (the two become one); old forms including 𡨆() and 𡪀() are not abbrev.
