The Shuōwén Seal form of 女(􂈻𠨰) nǚ ‘girl/woman’ derives from old pictographs sketching a woman; in much older (OBI) graphs the woman seems to be kneeling/sitting; a central loop represents the folded arms (as cradling a child), or breasts; the first stroke (㇛) of the modern form corresponds to the central curved stroke of the Seal form (the top of which marks the head, and the bottom the foot, in old graphs); the other two strokes (㇒, ㇐) of the modern form correspond to the other two Seal strokes (which draw the central ‘arms/breasts’ loop of the old graph).
