The Shuōwén Seal form of 鐵(􂜶) tiě ‘iron (metal)’ combines 金 ‘metal’, and 𢧜(􁰓𢧤) zhì ‘great strength’ (phonosemantic).
Note: The simple form 铁 derives from the old intermediary abbrev. form 鉄 (13 strokes), not directly from 鐵; cf. 鉄.
In the simple-form character 铁 the full-form component 𢧜 becomes 失 shī (phonetic).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 鐵(􂜶) tiě ‘iron (metal)’ combines 金 ‘metal’, and 𢧜(􁰓𢧤) zhì ‘great strength’ (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 𨫓(􂜷), 銕(􂜸).
Compare: 𢧜(􁰓𢧤) zhì ‘great strength’, in which 戜(􂍘) dié ‘sharp edge; cut’, and 土/大(􁰋) as in 赤(􁯾𤆍) chì ‘(glowing) orange/red (hot)’.
In the simple-form character 铁 the full-form component 𢧜 becomes 失 shī (phonetic); if 失 shī seems like a poor phonetic in 铁 tiě, cf. 跌, 迭.
Compare: 跌(􀗆) diē, 迭(􀓢) dié, 佚(􁘜) yì/dié.
Compare: 跌(􀗆) diē, 迭(􀓢) dié, 佚(􁘜) yì/dié.
