The Shuōwén Seal form of 𦰩(􂛂𡏳𡎸𦹆堇) qín/jìn ‘sticky/rich clay/mud’ combines 黃/黄(􂛮) huáng ‘(yellow/golden) color of rich/fertile earth’, and 土 (tǔ) ‘earth’; formerly wr. 𦻍(􂛃), 𦻋(􂛄).
The modern forms of 𦰩 used as a component are abbrev. of old 𡏳, omitting the lower components 火 and 土; the form 堇 is a different abbrev. of 𡏳.
Note: The full-form component 𦰩 is an old character, no longer much used as an independent character except in the form 堇, conflated with 蓳(􀊴) ‘violet’.
Note: 𦰩 is simplified to 又 in simple-form characters; 𦰩 is the phonetic in (and an old wr. of) several characters.
Compare: 漢, 难/難(􀩌𩁘), 艰/艱(􂛅𥌵), 滩/灘(􁻊).
Note: 𦰩 has 10 strokes in the Japanese form, but 11 strokes otherwise; 𦰩 first came into Unicode from J-Source (JIS).
