The Shuōwén Seal form of 青(􀷋𤯞𤯝靑) qīng ‘green’ (color of the east and of springtime) is said to combine 生(􁃎𤯓) shēng ‘fresh/alive/green’ (phonosemantic), and 丹 dān ‘cinnabar/red’ (as in 丹青 dānqīng ‘color/pigment’); the old variant 𡷉(􀷌) seems to have the old form of 丹/𠁿(􀷇) below, and above  is 屮(􀃿) chè as in 艸(􀄉), top of 生(􁃎), 木(􀻢), and 朱(􀾃) zhū ‘red’.
