The Shuōwén Seal form of 帅/帥(􁓯) has 𠂤(􂢟) duī ‘mound’ (phonetic) on the left (abbreviated to two strokes in the simple form 帅); and on the right is 巾 (jīn) ‘cloth’; a variant writing is 帨(􁓯) with 兌(􁝖) (phonetic) on the right (instead of 𠂤 on the left).

The simple-form character 帅 (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 帥 (9 strokes), replacing the full-form component 𠂤 (6 strokes) with 刂󰀁 (2 strokes).
Old graphs associated with 帥 are said to depict two hands spreading out a woven mat of some sort, but this is by no means clear; later forms have a shape like 巿/巾 on the right; and note that the old meaning of 帥 (as given in Shuōwén) is 佩巾 pèijīn ‘a woman's handkerchief worn/tied/belted at the left side of the waist (when in public)’ (HDC; cf. 佩).

Note: In the simple form 帅, the left-side component 刂󰀁 (2nd stroke is ㇓, not ㇚) is an abbrev. of 𠂤 (as in 师/師, 归/歸).
Later was used to write 率(􂔖) shuài ‘lead/command’ (率领; perhaps under the influence of 師 shī).

The Shuōwén Seal form of /帥(􁓯) shuài ‘woman's handkerchief’ combines 巾 (jīn) ‘cloth’, with 𠂤(􂢟) duī ‘mound’ (abbrev. phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 帨(􁓰), with 兌(􁝖).
Wieger says “巾 is the guidon of the commander”, that is, a small flag for leading troops in battle.

Compare: 率(􂔖) shuài ‘lead/command’ (率领), later wr. 帅/帥 (under the influence of 師 shī), formerly also wr. 𧗿(􀕕), 䢦(􀒋).
Compare: 师/師(􁃀) shī, which has one more stroke than 帅(帥).
+
Compare: 师/師(􁃀􁃁𠦵) shī ‘army (unit)’ (䷆), in which the right side is 帀(􁂿).
