<WL>拇 [mǔ] 拇指 thumb (拇印 ‘thumbprint’); 大拇脚指头 big toe@@; (HDZ:) (SW: 將指) 手脚的大指 (拇指)
From 扌(手 shǒu) ‘hand’ and 母 (phonetic).
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of 拇(􂄞) mǔ ‘thumb’ (SW: 將指 ‘large/middle finger/toe’) combines 扌(手 shǒu) ‘hand’, and 母(􂉝) mǔ ‘mother’ (phonosemantic); the larger finger of the hand (thumb, or middle finger), which leads/rules the other/smaller fingers (as a mother leads/shepherds her young).
 +
Note: In the SW gloss 將指 ‘large/middle finger/toe’ is taken to signify 拇指 ‘thumb’ of the 手 shǒu ‘hand’ (XK: 將: 率 shuài ‘lead/command’, 将帅 ‘leader/commander’), but the range of meanings of 將指 extends also to ‘middle (longest) finger’ (HDC), and in old usage to 拇指 ‘big toe’ (“thumb” of the foot).
 +
Note: (易) ䷞ → ䷰ 咸其拇 “The Influence shows itself in the big toe.” [Wilhelm/Baynes]
 +
Note: 拇 mǔ ‘big toe’ (at bottom of the hexagram), because the bottom line ⚋ ‘female’ (mother) changes to ⚊ ‘male’ (strong leader, in the face of rebellion, unruly children).
 +
Compare: 牧(􀣚𤘴) mù ‘herder (herd/tend livestock)’; for the SW gloss pun, cf. 母(􂉝) mǔ ‘mother’ (shepherdess).
