The Shuōwén Seal form of 虫(􂔗) huǐ/chóng is said to depict a poisonous snake/insect/animal of some kind; it is associated with the tail of the 虿/蠆(􂔾𦹌) chài ‘scorpion’, and also with the character 蛇(􂘀它􂗿) shé ‘snake’ (thought to depcit a ‘cobra’).
The full form 蟲 is 虫 tripled. (by itself used to be pronounced huǐ, but that rare word is now written 虺 huǐ, and 虫 is used as an abbreviation for 蟲 chóng).

The full form 蟲(􂗦) triples 虫(􂔗); it is a component in 蛊/蠱(􂗯) gǔ ‘worms in the belly; spoiled food’ (䷑).

Note: The old reading of 虫 huǐ connects it with (􂔩) huǐ ‘poisonous snake’.
