In Middle Chinese (SBGY) the readings were quite different: 𦘒 niè is a homophone of 𥬬(􀳈籋) niè (with -p coda); 聿 yù heads a different homophone group (with -t coda); compare the Karlgren (GSR) and Baxter (1992) reconstructions of 聿 yù and 筆 bǐ.
