-It might seem that 青 qīng ‘green’ and 争(爭) zhèng ‘struggle’ are both phonetic in 静 jìng: compare the variant forms 靖 and 竫, both with 立 lì ‘stand’ and either 青 or 爭 as phonetic. Shuōwén says 爭(􀫔) is phonetic in 静(􀷍) and 竫(􁱨), while 青(􀷋) is phonetic in 靖(􁱩). Although the three characters (靜靖竫) are homophones in Middle Chinese, they have separate lexical heads in Shuōwén: 靖(􁱩) and 竫(􁱨) are adjacent, but not synonymous; the old meaning of 静(􀷍) is quite different (明审, 详审); the phonetics 青(􀷋) and 爭(􀫔) are distinct in MC and in OC. But the HDZ glosses show that the characters have been used interchangeably for a long time. 靖 is still used in the word 绥靖 suíjìng ‘pacify’ (also written 綏靜 in HDC), but 竫 is for the most part obsolete (it occurs in three HDC words).
