In Shuōwén 谷(􁾱𠔌) is said to combine 水 ‘water’ (abbreviated) above (i.e., missing the central stroke, rather like 呇 abbreviated), and 口(􀌼𠙵) kǒu ‘mouth’ below.
Among simple form characters, 谷 gǔ is also borrowed to replace 穀 gǔ ‘grain,’ which happens to have the same pronunciation.
Compare: 㕣(􀐂􀐃𧮲􁾸䜭􁷒􁷑沇􁝖兌).
