<WL>𦣻 [shǒu] (=􁡖􁡞𩠐首) head; (!􁟲頁) [bǎi] (=􀦉百􀦊) hundred
A picture of a person’s head, without hair. Now 𦣻 occurs only as a component, e.g. in 面 miàn ‘face’, and 夏 xià ‘summer’. With the hair added: 首 shǒu ‘head’. With feet added: 页() yè ‘page’.

The Shuōwén Seal form of 𦣻(􁡖) shǒu ‘head’ depicts a person’s head (without hair); it is an abbreviated form of 首(􁡞𩠐) shǒu ‘hairy head’. The top of 𦣻(􁡖) shǒu ‘head’ is said to depict the ‘nose/nostrils’ as in 自(􀥿𦣹) zì ‘nose’ (鼻子), and the bottom is 口(􀌼𠙵) kǒu ‘jaws/mouth’ (嘴巴), cf. 𦣞(􂄖𦣝􂄗頤) yí ‘jaws/chin’. An old Shuōwén variant of 百(􀦉) bǎi ‘100’ also written 𦣻(􀦊) is conflated with 𦣻(􁡖) shǒu ‘head’ in the modern form 𦣻; cf. 𡚐(􀦒􀦑奭).

In modern use 𦣻 occurs only as a component (e.g. in 面 miàn ‘face’, 夏 xià ‘summer’), it is not used in monsyllabic or polysyllabic words (首 or 百 are used instead).
 +
Compare: 头(􁟳頭) tóu ‘head’, the common modern word for ‘head’, as in 头发 tóufa ‘hair (on the human head)’, 头脑 tóunǎo ‘brains’, 头骨 tóugǔ ‘skull’, 头疼 tóuténg ‘headache’.
