The Shuōwén Seal form of 近(􀓴𣂠) jìn ‘near/vicinity’ (附近) combines 辶(辵 chuò) ‘go’ (a short distance), and 斤(􂠊) jīn (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𣥍(􀓵), with 止(􀑥) ‘foot’ above as in 前(􀑪歬), 先(􁝦).
Not to be confused with 进() jìn ‘enter’.
