According to 《说文》, 互 is a variant of 䇘 ‘spool/reel’; this is the first meaning given by HDZ : 䇘: 收绳的器具; 互: 绞绳的器具. HDZ also mentions that in old texts 互 refers to a meat rack (on which meat is hung by hooks, for curing): 挂肉的架子 (cf. 《周礼‧地官‧牛人》; see also 楅衡).
