-From 白 and 十. 白 in this character is said to depict an ‘acorn’, as in 樂/櫟 ‘oak tree’; the acorn husk was a source of black dye, and tannic acid for tanning hides. The expression 青红皂白 ‘all the colors of the rainbow’ has 皂/皁 ‘black’ with this old meaning. Why 白 should should have been used for ‘white’ “is not clear” (cf. EDOC: 白 bái₁).
