<WL>烫(F燙) [tàng] burning hot (to the touch, cf. 热 rè); burn/scald
From 汤() tāng ‘soup’ over 火 (huǒ) ‘fire’.
+
The character 烫/燙 tàng ‘burning hot’ combines /湯(􁼮) tāng ‘hot/boiling water; soup’ (phonosemantic), and 火 (huǒ) ‘fire’.
Presumably 烫 tàng ‘hot’ and 汤 tāng ‘soup’ are cognates, but note the difference in tone.
+
Compare: 荡/盪(􀶪) dàng ‘wash dishes’, which also wrote tàng ‘burning hot’.
(is not listed in Karlgren.)
