The character 柬(􁃨) is composed of 束(􁃧) shù ‘bundle/bind’, with 丷(􀋮八) two dots added (to indicate 分別 ‘discrimination’; things are first bundled/collected, and then organized/distinguished; cf. 練).
Compare 束 shù ‘bundle’. 柬 is etymologically the same word as 简 jiǎn ‘simple’ and 拣 jiǎn ‘choose’.
