The Shuōwén Seal form of 吕/呂(􁏶) lǚ ‘backbone/spine’ (also wr. 𦛗) depicts two stacked vertebrae (脊椎骨) as circles, joined by a line representing the vertebral joint/disk; formerly wr. 膂(􁏷膐), with 旅(􁉹𣃨) lǚ (phonetic), cf. 旅/膂.
The full form 呂 has a 丿 stroke joining the two squares. The oldest forms, on oracle bones, have two circles with no joining stroke.
