The Shuōwén Seal form of 匀/勻() yún ‘(a couple/few things) sparingly/evenly-distributed’ (匀出, 均匀) combines 勹() bāo ‘wrap/encompass’ (包), and 二() èr ‘two’ (the even/balanced number, of ⚋ earth), as in 仁() rén ‘benevolence’; when things are few, they are held dear, and must be divided evenly/fairly. | |||
Note: Received SW texts gloss 匀 with 少 ‘few’, which is sometimes said to be an error for 帀 zā (DYC), app. following SBGY, which cites the SW gloss 少 only after giving other senses as more primary (SBGY: 勻: 徧; 齊; (SW:) 少); this relates at least in part to one meaning of the component 勹(), under which SW classifies 匀 and 𠣘; cf. 帀/匝: 𠣘/周; 𠣘(): 帀徧; 徧(): 帀 (DYC); nevertheless, the SW gloss 少 is given priority in HDZ, in accordance with common modern usages such as 匀出 ‘spare/share something’, 匀分 ‘divide evenly’, 匀出一份 ‘apportion’ (when things are sparse, if you can spare it, share). | |||
