Originally 毄, from 軎 and 殳 (shū) ‘beat’. The meaning was, to jostle or bump, 口 representing the end of a 車 (chē) war chariot’s axle. 毄 became 𣪠 by the omission of one stroke. Then a 手 (shǒu) hand was added, forming 擊. The modern simple form is .

The simple-form character 击 (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the upper-left part 𨊥 (9 strokes) of the full-form character 擊 (17 strokes).
Compare , also a rare character 墼 jī.
+
Note: The simple form 击 retains the first stroke and last four strokes of 𨊥, but omits the central part 日 (4 strokes); the remaining parts 殳 (4 strokes) and 手 (4 strokes) are also omitted, for a total of 12 strokes omitted from the full-form.

The full-form character 擊 is itself an abbrev. of old forms with (14 strokes) above instead of 𣪠 (13 strokes).

The Shuōwén Seal form of 擊(􂈙) jī ‘strike/hit/beat’ combines 手 (shǒu) ‘hand’ (hitting), and 𣪠(􀡟毄) jī ‘strike/hit’ (phonosemantic).
 +
Note: Formerly wr. 𣪠(􀡟毄) ‘jostle/bump’, with 殳 (shū) ‘beat’, and 軎(􂡟) wèi, in which represented the end of a 車 cart axle; 毄 was abbrev. to 𣪠 by the omission of a stroke (with 凵 suggesting wheel hub covering the axel end); later, 手 was added to specify ‘hit (with the hand/etc.)’, vs. other old usages of 𣪠 (繫, 𡢖, …).
 +
Note: The full form 擊 is an augmented form of its component 𣪠, but it is an abbrev. of that augmented form (with 𣪠 instead of 毄).
 +
Compare: 系/繫(􂓢) ; (􂙖) , 𡢖(􂋦) qì.
 +
Compare: 坴(􂘴), 陆/陸(􂢩) lù ‘high/level dry land’ (大陆); 圥(􀄆𡴆) lù ‘mushroom’.
 +
Note: In the simple form 陆 the right-side shape 击 replaces the full-form 陸 component 坴, not 擊.
