The simple-form character 笔 bǐ ‘writing brush’ (10 strokes) is a traditional abbrev. of the full-form character 筆 (12 strokes), dating back to at least the Song dynasty; it combines 竹 zhú ‘bamboo’ over 毛 máo ‘hair’, since 毛笔 ‘writing brushes’ are made by attaching a bamboo handle to animal-hair (goat/pig/etc.) bristles.
