The simple-form character 圣 (5 strokes) is an old form, long used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 聖 (13 strokes), replacing the upper full-form parts with 又 (2 strokes), and the lower with 土 (3 strokes).
The simple-form character 圣 (5 strokes) is an old character, long-ago re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 聖 (13 strokes), replacing the upper full-form part 𦔻 (9 strokes) with 又 (2 strokes), and the lower part 王 (4 strokes) with 土 (3 strokes).
Note: The top part 𦔻 of the full form is said to be an old wr. of 聖; formerly also wr. 𡑺/𧟿/𠄵.
Note: Formerly 圣 kū ‘dig’; as the simple form of 聖(􂃻) shèng ‘sage/master’ (cf. 聖), the shape 圣 derives from old intermediary forms such as 𩫽/𡑺 (YTZ) in which 土 specifies the land of mortals, vs. 𦔻 above for the immortal wisdom of the heavens (sage as mediator between heaven and earth; cf. 亟/𠄹, 王); the form 圣 (shèng) also suggests an old modification of 生 (shēng), cf. /生辰, 星辰.
The Shuōwén Seal form of (􂃻) shèng ‘sage’ combines (ěr) ‘ear/hear’, and (􀎤) chéng ‘balanced/measured (words, speaking at court)(phonosemantic).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 圣(􂙾𡉄) kū ‘dig (earth, with the hand)combines (􂘢) tǔ ‘earth/dirt’, and (􀠋) yòu ‘(strong right) hand’.
“[聖] Those who 耳 listened to and understood the 呈 advice given, and therefore became wise; wise, perfect; 通也。从耳, 从呈。按耳順之谓聖” —Wieger.
Note: SW identifies (􂙾𡉄) kū ‘dig’ as an old dialect word; cf. 窟/堀(􂙊𡑥) kū ‘cave/hole (in the ground)’, 掘(􂇷𢶵) jué ‘dig/excavate’.
The simple form is an old character, reused as the simple form of 聖; formerly 圣(􂙾𡉄) kū ‘dig (earth, with the hand)’, cf. 怪(􁴍) guài; cf. 圣/𡉄(􂙙扗在) zài.
Compare: 怪(􁴍) guài ‘strange’; 圣/𡉄(􂙙扗在) zài.
“[圣 kū] to work in the fields — from 又 hand and 土 earth, soil; character sometimes used as an abbrev. for 聖” —Karlgren(AD).
“[圣 kū] to work in the fields — from 又 hand and 土 earth, soil; character sometimes used as an abbrev. for 聖” —Karlgren(AD).
Compare: 王/壬(􁙰𡔛𡈼) tǐng ‘stand up/before’, as in 呈(􀎤) chéng.
