The Shuōwén Seal form of 莫(𦶛) mù ‘sunset/twilight/dusk’ (暮) combines 日 ‘sun/light’ (setting), and 𦬇(茻𦬠) mǎng/mǔ ‘thick plants/brush’ (phonosemantic): the sun at sunset, setting into the brush/jungle. | The character 莫 (10 strokes) is an abbrev. of the old form 𦶛 (16 strokes), replacing the top of the old component 𦬇(茻) with 艹(艸), and the bottom with 大. | ||
