The full form 體 is 骨 () ‘bone’ plus 豊 lǐ ‘vessel’. The simple form was originally a variant of 笨 bèn (see below).

The simple-form character 体 (7 strokes) is an old form, re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character tǐ ‘body’ (22 strokes), formerly also wr. 躰/骵/軆.
“Body; corporation; substance, the essential; (treat as essential:) treat with consideration; form, type — is 豊 liei phonetic or co-signific (骨 bones and 豊 vessels)?” —Karlgren.

Note: The form 体 originated as a variant of 笨(􀱩) bèn; in the variants 体/躰/骵 of 體, the use of 本 (5 strokes) as an abbrev. of the component 豊 (13 strokes) relates to the old form of 豊(􀵧𧯽), in which the shape of the inner component 丰(􁃏𡴀) is similar to 本(􀾀).
The simple form 体 is completely different. It is the 本 (běn) main part of a 亻(人 rén) person: the body. (According to Henshall, the form 体, standard in Japan, “...has been used for several centuries as a substitute, but is technically a separate character with an early meaning of crude...”. Wieger lists 体 under phonetic series 147 as běn ‘rude’).

The Shuōwén Seal form of 体/體(􀬣) tǐ ‘body’ combines 骨(􀬐) gǔ ‘bones’, and 豊(􀵧𧯽) lǐ ‘ritual/sacred vessel’ (phonosemantic); human body as ritual/sacred vessel, comprised of 4 regions, each with 3 zones, giving 12 major parts total: the head (crown, face, jaw), the torso (shoulders, spine, waist/hips), the arms (upper-arm, forearm, hand), the legs (thigh, shin/calf, foot); cf. 龟.
According to HDZ, the first usage of 体 bèn was for 笨(􀱩) bèn, with the meaning ‘粗劣’; so the Simple form re-used a pre-existing character with a different meaning (本 is no longer phonetic in 体).

Older graphs associated with 體 have 身 or 肉 on the left side, cf. 軆, 𦡊 (HDZ).
