The simple-form character 黾 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 黽 (13 strokes), omitting the interior the full-form strokes.
The simple form 黾 was included in the dictionary 《字彙》 (1615 A.D.)
+
Note: The simple form 黾 is an abbrev. (rather like 龟), hundreds of years old (at least), included in the dictionary 《字彙》 (1615 AD).
The modern word for ‘frog’ is 蛙 wā or 青蛙 qīngwā.
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of 黾/黽(􂘅𪓑) měng ‘frog’ (青蛙) is said to combine 它(􂗿) shé ‘snake’ (蛇) depicting the reptilian/amphibian head, with a shape like 卵(􂘗) luǎn ‘egg’ depicting the female frog's fat belly full of jelly and eggs (DYC); the old graph 𪓝(􂘆) adds 𠬞(􀝏) for the forelegs.
 +
Note: 黾/黽(􂘅𪓑) měng ‘frog’ has the same 它(􂗿) shé ‘snake’ head as 龟(􂘁龜) guī ‘tortoise/turtle’, but a big belly instead of the carapace/shell; note the dot at the top of the old forms 𪓑(􂘅), lost in the modern forms 黾/黽.
 +
Compare: 卵(􂘗) luǎn ‘egg’ (abbrev. of 黽); 申(􂥻𦥔) shēn ‘flexible/stretch’ (伸), 坤(􂘥) kūn ‘female’ (☷䷁).
 +
Compare: (􂘇鼃) ‘frog’ (as in the common modern word 青蛙 qīngwā ‘frog’).
 +
Compare: 蝇(􂘐蠅) yíng ‘fly (insect)’ (苍蝇); 鼍(􂘍鼉) tuó ‘alligator’; 绳(􂒵繩) shéng ‘rope’.
 +
The simple form of radical 205 of the 214 Kāngxī radicals, 黾 is classified under 黽.
