<WL>联(F聯) [lián] unite, join/joint; 联系 liánxì contact/connection

<WL>联(F聯) [lián] link/join/unite; 联系 contact/connection; 关联 related/connected; 联营 joint venture
This SImple form is from 耳 ěr ‘ear’ and 关; the similarity to (𢇇關) guān is accidental; the Full form 聯 has 𢇇 on the right.
+
The simple-form character 联 lián ‘link’ is an abbrev. of the full-form character 聯, replacing the right-side full-form component 𢇇 guān (11 strokes) with the homophonous component 关 guān (6 strokes), as in 关/關.
“The seal has 絲 to the right, corrupted in the modern form: to string together 耳 the ears of slain enemies.” —Karlgren.
+
In the full-form character 聯 the right-side component 𢇇(􂔕𢇅) guān combines 𢆶 over 丱/卝 guàn/luǎn (phonetic); 𢇇 here was formerly wr. 絲.
How gruesome! Remember 联 contains 关 by associating 关系 guānxi ‘relation, significance’ with 联系 liánxì ‘contact, relation’.
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of 聯(􂃹䏈) lián ‘link’ combines (􂃱) ěr ‘ear’, and a shape like 絲(􂔓) sī ‘silk’, short for 䜌(􀚾) luán ‘link’ (abbrev. phonosemantic): the ears remain attached/connected to the head, one's reputation is developed and remains intact (like unbroken strands of silk), in continuous contact with one's connections, listening closely, paying careful attention to what is said plainly.
Don’t confuse with lián; but if you do confuse them, note that these form an old 古今 ‘ancient-and-modern’ pair (in 周 times they wrote 聯, while in 汉 times they wrote 連); some old texts write 連系 for 聯系, and Shuōwén defines 聯 as 連.
+
Note: The old component 絲(􂔓) here is short for 䜌(􀚾) luán ‘link’ (abbrev. phonosemantic); the modern form 聯 replaces 絲 with 𢇇, changing the lower part to 丱/卝 guàn/luǎn (phonetic) as an indication that the right side 絲(􂔓) is an abbrev. of 䜌(􀚾) luán, not simply 絲(􂔓) sī ‘silk’.
 +
Compare: 关/關(􂃠𨶚) guān ‘shut (a door)’; 弯/彎(􂏒) wān ‘draw a bow’, formerly also wr. 關.
 +
Compare: 𢇇(􂔕𢇅𢇂𡮟𠬆) guān ‘ply the shuttle in the loom’, in which 丱(􂘘卝􂘗卵) luǎn/guàn (phonetic), cf. 卵(􂘗) luǎn ‘egg’.
 +
Compare: 贯/貫(􁊮) ‘string/necklace of cowries/cash’, formerly wr. 串/毌(􁊭).
 +
Compare: 关系=關係 guānxi ‘relation/significance’; 联系=聯繫 liánxì ‘relation/contact’; 连/联贯=連/聯貫 liánguàn ‘link up’.
 +
Note: and /連(􀓤) are an old 古今 ‘ancient-and-modern’ pair; in 周 times people wrote 聯, but in 汉 times they wrote 連 (formerly ‘rickshaw’); some old texts write 連系 for 聯系, and Shuōwén defines 聯 as 連.

“The seal has 絲 to the right, corrupted in the modern form: to string together 耳 the ears of slain enemies.” —Karlgren(AD).

Compare: 馘(􂄑􂄐聝) guó ‘cut off heads/ears, tally slain enemies’.
