<WL>韵(F韻) [yùn] (押韵) rhyme; 韵文 verse; 《广韵》Guǎngyùn (Middle Chinese rhyming dictionary)@@; (HDZ:) cf. 韻
From 音 (yīn) ‘sound’ and (full form:) 員 yuán or (simple form:) 匀 yún phonetic. The simple form 韵 dates back at least to the Song dynasty.
+
The simple-form character 韵 yùn ‘rhyme’ (13 strokes) is an old variant of the full-form character 韻 (19 strokes), replacing the full-form component 員 (10 strokes) with 匀 (4 strokes), not 员.
 +
The full-form character 韻 yùn ‘rhyme’ combines 音(􀜻) yīn ‘articulated/musical sound/tone’, and (􁄎) yuán/yún/yùn (phonosemantic); formerly wr. /勻(􁣋), and 均(􂘭), 𧥺, 𡁩.
 +
Note: The simple form 韵 (some 1,000 years old) is older than the full form 韻; formerly wr. 匀 and 均, cf. 律 (HDZ).
 +
Compare: 匀/勻(􁣋) yún ‘evenly-distributed’; 均(􂘭) jūn ‘even; fair’.
