Picture of a quiver containing an arrow. It was later re-interpreted as a mouth (tongue) with something in (on) it. Compare 含 hán ‘contain’, which might be the same word etymologically. The top stroke 乛 and component 了 relate to the 𢎘() component of 函 in Shuōwén.
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of 函(􁊱圅) hán ‘tongue (in the mouth)’ combines 乛/龴(􁊰𢎘) hàn ‘bud’ (phonosemantic), and a lower part which looks like 𢆉(􀗾) within 囗(􁃰) said to depict a ‘tongue’; formerly also wr. (􁊲), with 月/肉(􀬪𠕎) ròu ‘meat’, and 今(􀸵) jīn (phonosemantic).
 +
Compare: (􀍣) hán ‘hold/keep sth. in the mouth; contain’.
 +
Compare: 舌(􀗹) shé ‘tongue’, in which 干(􀗽) gān (phonosemantic), not 𢆉(􀗾) rěn.
 +
Compare: 㐁(􀘃􀘄𠀬) tiàn ‘tongue/lick’ (舔).
 +
Older graphs associated with 函 are thought to depict a quiver with arrow (箭筒/袋, cf. 箙, 韇, 䩮).
 +
Compare: 医(􂎂) yì ‘(archery) quiver’; 晉(􁈡𣋤) jìn.
