The Shuōwén Seal form of 癹() bá ‘trample’ combines 癶(𣥠) bō ‘step on’ (phonosemantic) and 殳() shū ‘(ancient weapon)’; 癹 is the (phonosemantic) component of 發() fā ‘draw/shoot a bow/crossbow’; the top component 癶(𣥠) bō ‘step on’ in these compounds indicates the drawing of a crossbow by stepping on it with the feet (and pulling with the hands); cf. 蹳. | |||
