<WL>凤(F鳳) [fèng] male phoenix (fabulous/mythical bird of good omen); virtuous person; 鸾凤 husband and wife (male and female phoenixes), 鸾凤和鸣 happy couple
From 凡 fán phonetic and 鸟() ‘bird’. The inner part has been abbreviated to 又 in the simple form 凤. See the full form 鳳 for discussion.
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of 凤/鳳(􀨥) fèng ‘phoenix’ (mythical/auspicious bird) is said to combine 鸟/鳥 (niǎo) ‘bird’, and (􂘡) fán ‘all/universal’ (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 朋(􀨦𢐴), 鹏/鵬(􀨧𪈵).
Don’t confuse with 风() fēng ‘wind’.
+
Note: The component 凡(􂘡) in 凤/鳳(􀨥) is as in 风/風(􂗰) fēng ‘wind’ (pervasive/everywhere); the mythical phoenix flies swiftly on the wind, as fast as thought, quickly throughout the world.
 +
In the modern simplified form 凤, the 12 inner full-form strokes are abbrev. to a shape like 又 yòu (2 strokes), giving a form similar to 风 fēng ‘wind’ (in which 乂/㐅, not 又).
 +
Compare:fèng ‘male phoenix’; 鸞 luán ‘female phoenix’ (凰 huáng); the pairing of male and female phoenixes is the picture of happiness (marital bliss); cf. 朋, 宜(􁏒𡨆).
 +
Compare: 鵬 péng ‘roc’; 朋 péng ‘friend’ (朋友 péngyou).
 +
Compare: 凤/鳳(􀨥) fèng; 鹏/鵬(􀨧𪈵) péng/fèng; 朋(􀨦𢐴) péng.
 +
Note: The forms 鹏/鵬, and 朋 are SW variants of 凤/鳳 (mythical/auspicious bird), but usages diverged over the years; there are two traditional readings of the mythical bird name (péng/fèng), but the character 朋 péng ‘friend’ has become specialized in modern usage (cf. 朋).
