Two 糸() twisted strands of silk.
The simple-form character 丝 (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 絲 (12 strokes), dropping the last stroke (丶) from each part 幺, and replacing the lower parts 小小 (6 strokes) with 一 (1 stroke).
Note: The simple form 丝 is like the simple-form component 纟 (3 strokes) doubled, but with only a single horizontal stroke below; the upper full-form part 𢆶 (6 strokes) is replaced with (4 strokes).
Note: In the full-form character 絲⿰糹糸, the left-side part is wr. 糹 (with 3 dots below, the usual left-side component form), while the right-side part is wr. 糸 (with 小).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 絲(􂔓) sī ‘silk/thread’ doubles 糸(􂏳) sī ‘silk/thread’ (phonosemantic).
Note: Formerly 糸(􂏳􂏴𢆯幺􀪺) mì ‘fine thread/silk’; the reading 糸 sī ‘silk’ reflects usage of 糸 as an old wr. or abbrev. of 絲(􂔓) sī ‘silk/thread’ (cf. 糸).
