<WL>糸 [sī] (=絲S丝糹S纟) 蚕丝 twisted silk (radical 120, 糸部, 绞丝旁)@@ [mì] 細絲 (=􁔇幎羃冪S幂); 微小; (量词); ; 幺
The modern character for ‘silk’ is 丝(絲) , from 糸 or 纟 doubled.
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of the component 糸(􂏳) mì/sī ‘fine thread/silk’ (细丝) is said to represent a bound skein of silk thread (束丝); the old form 𢆯(􂏴幺􀪺) seems to depict strands/threads spun/twisted together; the bottom of 糸(􂏳) looks like 巾(􁓭) jīn ‘cloth’ (three/multiple strands/threads spun/twisted together), as in 帛(􁔷) bó ‘silk’ (丝帛).
糸 is the 120th Kangxi radical (糸部 sībù); as the semantic determiner in other characters it means ‘thread/string; cloth/fabric’.
+
Note: The reading 糸 sī ‘silk’ relates to usage of 糸 as an abbrev. of /絲(􂔓) sī ‘silk’; the Shuōwén reading 糸(􂏳􂏴𢆯􀪺幺) mì ‘fine silk/thread’ (SBGY: /mik/) suggests a connection with the homophonous component 冖(􁒧𠘨) mì ‘cloth/cover’, later wr. 幂/冪(􁔇幎羃) mì ‘cloth/cover’, cf. 冥(􁉼) míng.
As a component it is sometimes called 绞丝旁 jiǎosīpáng ‘twisted silk component’.
+
Compare: 厶(􁣶), 私(􁋥) sī ‘private’; 幺(􀪺), 𢆯(􂏴), 玄(􀫅), 玆(􀫇), 兹/茲(􀈸), 丝/(􂔓), 𡮟(􂔕𢇅𢇇).
At the left side of a character, 糸 is sometimes written 糹 (full form) or 纟 (simple form).
+
Compare: 巾(􁓭); 芇(􀧷) mián, in 茧/繭(􂏵𦇂􂏶絸) jiǎn ‘cocoon’.
At the right side or bottom of a character it is written 糸, as in 絲素紫累綮纂.
+
糸 is the 120th Kangxi radical (糸部 sībù ‘silk radical’); as semantic determiner ‘thread/string; cloth/fabric; tie/bind/knot’.
In modern times is used only as a component.
+
In modern usage 糸 is used only as a radical/component, sometimes called 绞丝旁 jiǎosīpáng ‘twisted silk component’; on the left side of a character, 糸 is often wr. 糹 (full form), or 纟 (simple form); on the right side or bottom of a character it is wr. : 絲, 素紫累綮纂….
It is usually pronounced “sī” as in the name 糸部 sībù ‘Kangxi radical 120’; 糸 doubled gives 絲, also pronounced “sī”.
+
HDZ: : mì : 细丝; 微小; (量词) 丝的二分之一; 连; 幺 (cf. 𢆯) • sī : 絲: 蚕丝 (蚕吐的丝)
In 《说文》 􂏳() is said to mean “細絲” ‘fine silk/thread’, and to depict a bound skein of silk threads.

The old reading “mì” (mik; SBGY) suggests a connection with several homophonous ‘cloth/cover’ characters: 􁔇幎羃冪幂􁒧𠘨冖.
