<WL>杀(F殺) [shā] kill/murder (杀害, 杀死), slay/massacre; to death@@  [shài] [sà] [xiè] [shì] [shà] cf. 殺
From 乂 (yì) ‘shears’ and 木 (mù) ‘tree’.
+
The simple-form character 杀 (6 strokes) is an old form, today seen as an abbrev. of the full-form character 殺 (10 strokes), omitting the right-side full-form component 殳 (4 strokes).
To 乂 cut a 木 plant: decapitate.
+
Note: The shape 杀 in 殺 derives from the old variant form 𢁛(􀡵) discussed below; the simple form 杀 suggests 乂(􂌾) ‘to cut down’ (刈, to X/cross out; cf. 爻), and 木(􀻢) ‘tree’ (decapitate), but the lower part 木 (short for 术 in some old forms) corresponds to the bottom of the old form 𢁛.
The full form 殺 has 殳 (shū) ‘beat’ added.
+
The full-form character 殺 (10 strokes) is an abbrev. of older forms such as 𣪩 (13 strokes), in which the left-side part ⿱爻朮 (9 strokes) corresponds to old 𢁛 (6 strokes), later wr. 杀 (6 strokes).

The Shuōwén Seal form of 殺(􀡱) shā ‘slay/kill’ (戮) is said to combine 术(􁋬朮􁋫秫) shú ‘sorghum’ (grain/cereal), and 殽(􀡫) xiáo/yáo ‘mix/mingle; meat’ (abbrev. phonosemantic), which is itself a variant of 肴(􀮄𦙩) yáo/xiáo ‘cut meat’.

Note: 术 in 殺(􀡱) suggests 術(􀕋) shù ‘skill’ (martial art), and but is an agricultural/animal-husbandry reference (cf. 畜); perhaps formerly 杀/殺(􀡱) shā ‘flail (grain); beat/kill’, cf. 殳; SW includes several variants of 殺, all lacking traditional structural analysis: 𣪩(􀡲), 𢿹(􀡳), 𢽅(􀡴), 𢁛(􀡵), 𠮁(􀡶); the old form 𢁛(􀡵) is of special interest, since it explains the structure of the other forms, and is the ancestor of the simple form 杀 (see below).

Compare: 㣇(􁧱𡱃􁧲𢑞􁧳𠭣) yì ‘wild boar’; in the old form 𢁛(􀡵) shā ‘slay/kill’ the top stroke replaces/decapitates the 彑(􁧻) jì ‘boar's head/snout/tusks’ (cf. 亠/头 tóu); thus, 𢁛(􀡵) represents the legs/body of the slain/decapitated pig.
 +
Compare: 𧰧(􁧛􁧚豕) shǐ ‘pig’, 𢁓(􂧑􂧐亥) hài (地支).
 +
Compare: 希/稀(􁋢) xī ‘sparse (grain/grass)’; as a component 稀 (abbrev.) becomes 希.
 +
Older graphs associated with 杀/殺(􀡱) shā ‘slay/kill’ (HDZ) resemble the SW variant form 𢁛(􀡵), perhaps depicting a boar shot by an arrow (the fletched end of the arrow protrudes from the body); cf. 矢.
 +
Note: The component 术(􁋬朮) shú ‘sorghum’ has a 丶 ‘dot’, sometimes present in 11-stroke full forms of 殺; in Unicode the 10 and 11-stroke variant glyphs were unified under a single abstract character.
