From 马(馬 mǎ) ‘horse’ and 主 zhǔ phonetic.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 驻/駐(􁩻) zhù ‘rein in a horse’ combines 马/馬 (mǎ) ‘horse’, and 主(􀷃) zhǔ ‘master’ (phonosemantic); the rider/driver/master brings the horse to a halt.
驻 zhù is etymologically the same word as 住 zhù. 马(馬 mǎ) ‘horse’ suggests a military emphasis, or the idea of stopping temporarily during a long journey.
Compare: 住 zhù ‘live/reside’ (居住 jūzhù), formerly wr. 主 ‘lord/master’ (master of a domain, dwelling in a place).
