The Shuōwén Seal form of 軎(􂡟) wèi ‘ends of a cart/carriage axel’ combines 车/車(􂠴) chē ‘cart/carriage’, and a round shape (口) marking the hole at the end of the axel to receive the linchpin securing the wheel (in the area covered by a 车毂 ‘hubcap’); formerly wr. 轊(􂡠), with 彗(􀠮) huì (phonetic), cf. 𨊢 huì; as a component later wr. 𨊥, cf. 击/擊(􂈙).
be distinguished from ” —Karlgren.
Compare: 轚(􂢉) jí ‘cart axel-ends/linchpins bump/collide’; 击/擊(􂈙) jī ‘beat/strike’.
The character 击() jī derives from 軎 wèi.
Note: 軎 also referred to a kind of cylindrical brass/iron fitting (apparently inserted axially, not perpendicularly, into the hollow end of the axle) with a perpendicular hole (matching that on the axel) to accept the linchpin (辖); this fitting had screw-like threads, and it was apparently screwed into the end of the axel to reinforce it in the area of the linchpin hole (to prevent the linchpin from tearing out the end of the wooden axel).
Compare: 叀(􀪿) zhuān ‘ceramic spindle’.
“[軎] Shaft of a carriage — end of shaft marked by a circle (here a square); to be distinguished from 叀” —Karlgren(AD).
