Originally 戠, from 音 (yīn) ‘sound’ and 戈 () ‘weapon’, the meaning was ‘officer’:
+
The simple-form character 职 (11 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 職 (18 strokes), replacing the full-form component 戠 (12 strokes) with (5 strokes).
“The man with 戈 a lance who 音 commands” —Karlgren.
+
Note: In the simple form 职, the full-form component 戠 is replaced by 只 zhǐ (phonetic); for use of 只 to simplify the full-form component 戠, cf. .
To 戠 was added 耳 (ěr) ‘ear’, since one who governs should also know how to listen. Extended meaning: office, profession, occupation.

The Shuōwén Seal form of 职/職(􂃿) zhí ‘know/remember details (of one's job/duties)’ combines 耳 ‘ear/listen/hear’, and 戠(􂍦) zhī/zhí ‘duty’ (phonosemantic); listening carefully to commands and feedback, one knows/remembers one's duties; cf. , which is said to be an old wr. of various characters in which it occurs.
In the simple form 职, 戠 is replace by 只 zhǐ phonetic. In fact most of the simple form characters with as phonetic originally contained 戠.

Compare: 识/識(􀙐􂍦戠) zhì ‘banner/flag’ (帜/幟); 织/織(􂐅) zhī ‘weave’; 识/識 zhì/shí ‘remember/know’.

Note: Formerly 职/職 zhí ‘know/remember details (of one's job/duties)’, later mainly 职/職 zhí ‘job/duties’; cf. SW 㭰(􀑼) for 識/職 variation (XK).
