<WL>耕 [gēng] to plough, till
+
<WL>耕 [gēng] plough/plow (耕地), till/cultivate (耕种); 春耕 spring plowing; 耕夫 ploughman/farmer; 耕畜 plow/draft animal@@; (HDZ:) …
From 耒 (lěi) ‘plough’ and 井 (jǐng) ‘well’.
+
The Shuōwén Seal form of 耕(􀰥𦓮) gēng ‘plough/till’ combines 耒 (lěi) ‘plough’ and 井(􀷎丼) jǐng ‘wellspring’ (phonosemantic); in SW is defined with respect to the idyllic 井田 jǐngtián ‘well-field system’, of fields cultivated around a common wellspring (cf. 井).
井 is co-signific, with the meaning ‘village’. 井 jǐng is not phonetic: has a guttural initial, while had a dental initial (ts-). (Palatals j, q, x in Mandarin can be derived either from gutturals g, k, h, or from dentals ts, dz, s.) 耕 gēng is phonetic in 形 xíng and 刑 xíng, after being abbreviated into 井 and then distorted into 开.
+
Note: The received SW text identifies as phonetic in 耕, but DYC says it is phonosemantic (he puts and 耕 in the same OC rhyme class; cf. GSR); cf. 形/𢒈.
